I really don't think there is a way to express the joy we have in releasing this website, although I did try above. This website represents CCP's continued belief in offering support to third-party developers who give so much value to our players through their efforts. Along with launching this site I'm happy to say I've been reassigned with the primary purpose of supporting third-party developers. That includes things such as writing documentation, fixing defects with the XML API, expanding CREST, and whatever else is deemed the right thing to do for third-party developers.

Documentation

One of the goals of this website is to offer a central location for official CCP documentation. While EVElopedia works, it is a lot harder to search, browse, and just in general find the correct information. So while EVElopedia will continue to be used for things such as Getting Started Examples, information on what the XML API is, what CREST is, and that kind of thing will be located on the developer website.

The documentation we are releasing now is very general documentation. As stated above, it includes answers to questions like “what does CCP offer” and “what is the XML API” as well as links to external resources. Documentation on specific endpoints for the XML API and CREST is something that we are working on getting out, but for now they still do not exist. This is still a giant step in the right direction.

If you browse the resources section you will probably notice that there are still bits and pieces missing and/or incomplete. One of the beautiful things about this site is that the content can be edited directly by dev teams, not just the web devs. So we can update all the documentation, including things like the link to the SDE. So please send suggestions for edits, tweaks, improvements to the documentation and I’ll try to shoot out changes quickly.

Expanding the EVE Online SSO

We recently began letting a small, but growing, number of websites access and use the EVE Single-Sign-On. That was the first step in a plan that we outlined at FanFest this year which has the final goal of getting authenticated read and write access to CREST out to third-party developers. The second step in this plan is allowing anyone who would like to develop with the SSO to do so without having to request access from me directly. Our goal with the plan outlined at FanFest was to take the very minimal steps required, to help ensure the plan actually happened. While looking at getting everyone access to the SSO we clearly needed some way to allow them to register. We could build a new website from scratch, or we could look at past projects that never got released. That look into the past is what brought this developers website back from the dead.

With the developer’s website now live comes an expansion of the SSO for third-party developers. You can now login, register as a third party developer, and begin creating applications. For now applications can be authentication only applications, ones that use the SSO and not CREST.

Please keep in mind, that while this site is on Sisi any applications you create are going to be for Sisi and not TQ. Once the website goes live on TQ you will have to recreate your applications over there. This should however let you get started with testing.

Third-Party Dev Blogs

One of the huge benefits with having a website dedicated to third-party developers is that it is the natural place for dedicated third party-developer dev blogs. Previous to this if we had an announcement to make but it wasn't really considered large enough for a full dev blog it would just be a post on the technology lab forums. This was primarily due to not wanting to spam the normal dev blog channel with things only relevant to third-party developers.

Now that we have a channel for dev blogs dedicated to third-party developers you can expect to see a lot more updates posted here--when we make minor changes to an API, deploy something for testing, request some feedback--this will be the main channel of third-party developercommunicatn. For that reason I highly recommend you subscribe to the RSS feed or just come back here often!

That's all for now. I hope you guys are as excited about this as we are here. Fly safe good pilots.
